From Dreaming to Doing SCBWI Conference Thoughts

Raise your hand if you had an amazing time at our regional From Dreaming to Doing SCBWI Conference! (Mine is up. Way up!) The presenters this year were amazing and I walked away feeling informed, inspired, and ready to do more doing than dreaming.

So many thanks to our co-regional advisors, Kathy McMillan and Sue Poduska as well as the planning committee, volunteers, presenters, attendees, Curious Iguana Bookstore, and staff at the Bishop Claggett Center.

And Bruce Coville.

Sigh.

Bruce was warm, funny, informative, and gracious, making each person he spoke to feel as though they were his only concern at the moment. Loved him. And he also provided many great quotes over the weekend, as proved by our regional Twitter feed:

Amazing.

Someone should make cute graphics with quotes from Bruce Coville and the other presenters. Oh wait! Somebody did! Be sure to check out the Words of Wisdom blog post by Megan LaCroix. I think this one is my favorite!

And a different someone <<cough, Laura Bowers, cough>> might have gotten carried away at the Curious Iguana Bookstore area. I always go into these things with a budget, but books are even harder to resist after being inspired by their authors.

I do believe that @mystymyst must also share the title of Biggest Book Hauls from Curious Iguana Bookstore as well:

Well done, @mystymyst, well done.

Another great addition to this year’s conference was Open Mic on Saturday night, where attendees were encouraged to share their work. They each did an amazing job and I’ve been inspired to join in next year if it’s offered again!

All in all, it was an amazing conference and I’m already looking forward to next year’s conference with a long list of goals to accomplish before then. What about you?

Did you enjoy the conference? If so, what was your favorite part? And do you have any goals for next year’s conference?

In closing, it seems fitting to sign off with one of my favorite tweets from the weekend:

About Laura Bowers

Laura is a writer, runner, reader, runDisney addict, and blogger at As The Eraser Burns, Joyful Miles, and Write, Run, Rejoice. In the past, she's been a waitress, telemarketer, cook, real estate agent, and during her college days, a costumed character at holiday parades. (Memories of being terrorized as a candy cane still haunt her at night.) At the age of thirty, she pursued her dream of being a writer. Her first novel, Beauty Shop for Rent, a “Steel Magnolias for teens,” was inspired by a rusted sign by a charming old house, and now, she can honestly say that writing is a thousand times more rewarding than being a candy cane!
