Tuesday This and Thats

Happy Tuesday, everyone! Today’s post has a lot of goodies. Grab some coffee and enjoy!

Awesome Member News!

scifi_150__V373831082_Congratulations and a mighty woo-HOO to regional member Joseph McCourt, who decided to take the plunge by entering the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Contest! Ten thousand total entries were received, which were judged on the “pitch” alone. Two thousand made it through to the second round and were split into five categories of four hundred each. During that phase, judges from Publisher’s Weekly reviewed excerpts and sent the top five hundred (one hundred per category) on to the Quarter Finals.

I’m happy to report that Joseph has made it to the Quarter Finals in the Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror division with his short excerpt of P. RIGLEY GROSBEAK AND THE BLOOD OF ALEXANDER!

Best of luck, Joseph, we have our fingers crossed for you!

safe_imageCongratulations, also, to both Timothy Young and Lauren Castillo whose books have advanced to Round 2 of the SCBWI Crystal Kite Member Choice Awards!

Voting ends tomorrow, so again, we’ll keep those fingers crossed for both of you, Lauren and Tim!

whiteboardI’m still bummed about missing Tara Lazar’s awesome, awesome breakout session at our recent Spring: Nature’s Revised Draft conference! But good news for me and every one else who missed it–she wrote about our event over at her Writing for Kids (While Raising Them) Blog!

Be sure to give it a look!

She has tons of awesome info for those of you who write picture books, like this one on picture book dummies and how to avoid common pitfalls.

(Sigh. I wish I could write picture books.)

Moving on!

Other SCBWI Events

Over at our MD/DE/WV Facebook page, Susan Detwiler shared information about East Pennsylvania’s upcoming Illustrator Day 2014 featuring multi award-winning picture book creator, David Wiesner, Scholastic Art Director, Marijka Kostiw, and agent Teresa Kietlinski from Prospect Agency! For those illustrators not far from Pennsylvania, it’s definitely worth checking out.

That’s it for now. Happy writing and drawing, everyone! 🙂
