PRESS RELEASE:

JANE YOLEN ESTABLISHES NEW GRANT FOR MIDLIST CHILDREN’S BOOK AUTHORS Award-winning children’s author recognizes the work of authors with new grant through the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.

Februrary 13, 2011 LOS ANGELES—

Together with The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators(SCBWI), beloved author Jane Yolen has created a new grant to honor mid-list authors who consistently sell work that doesn’t necessarily top the bestseller list.

According to Jane, “In these difficult book times, well-reviewed and honored authors often find themselves stalled in their writing lives and find they are having trouble selling new work. In our attention to up-and-coming authors, we, the reading public, often ignore these mid-list writers who struggle to remain true to their personal vision and craft. This grant is to say: SCBWI honors you, we recognize you, we are paying attention to your work.”

The first grant was awarded at the SCBWI 13th Annual Conference in New York City Mary Whittington, author of Carmina Come Dance, The Patchwork Lady, Troll Games, and Winter’s Child. This year’s honor recipients were Ann Whitford Paul, poet and author of numerous picture books including Little Monkey Says Goodnight, and Barbara Diamond Goldin, author of historical fiction and picture books including The Girl Who Lived with the Bears.

The grant is awarded by nomination only and the winners and honorees are chosen by Jane Yolen herself. Nominations for the 2013 Jane Yolen Mid-List Author Grant will begin June 1st 2012 and close on November 1st 2012. Winners will be announced each year at the Winter Conference in New York City. Only current SCBWI members are eligible. Any SCBWI member can nominate another member for the award.

About Laura Bowers

Laura is a writer, runner, reader, runDisney addict, and blogger at As The Eraser Burns, Joyful Miles, and Write, Run, Rejoice. In the past, she's been a waitress, telemarketer, cook, real estate agent, and during her college days, a costumed character at holiday parades. (Memories of being terrorized as a candy cane still haunt her at night.) At the age of thirty, she pursued her dream of being a writer. Her first novel, Beauty Shop for Rent, a “Steel Magnolias for teens,” was inspired by a rusted sign by a charming old house, and now, she can honestly say that writing is a thousand times more rewarding than being a candy cane!
