Who: Featuring author and regional SCBWI member, Jane Conly, and her book, MURDER AFLOAT
What: This free event will include a talk by Jane Conly, light refreshments, and an opportunity to meet other authors and illustrators in the greater Baltimore area. Books will be available for purchasing and autographing.
Jane Conly was born in Virginia in 1948, and from an early age showed a proclivity toward tall tales– as a small child she was as likely to invent an answer to any question as to tell the truth! Jane grew up on a small farm and learned self-discipline from caring for farm animals and related outdoor chores. Her father worked for National Geographic Magazine as an editor and –much later– also wrote novels on the side, including Mrs. Frisby and The Rats of NIMH.
Jane began writing at an early age and continued through college and a graduate writing program at Johns Hopkins University. She was working as a free-lance writer when her father died, leaving an unfinished novel, Z for Zachariah, which she completed. She then went on to publish ten novels; the most recent is Murder Afloat, published last October by Hyperion. Her books have won various distinctions including a Newbery Honor Award for Crazy Lady! in 1991.
Now Jane divides her time between Baltimore and southern Pennsylvania, where she has a small cabin that is good for writing. Her two children, Eliza and Will, are teachers who live in New York City and Seoul, Korea. Her writing companion and silent critic is a large labrador retriever named Belle.
Jane Conly will talk about her inspiration for Murder Afloat, the research she did to solidify the story, and the process of writing and re-writing the book.
This is our first SCBWI event in the greater Baltimore area, so I hope all of you Baltimore writers will be sure to join us! Please RSVP to Naomi Milliner at firstname.lastname@example.org.
