Crystal Kite Award

This has already been announced through the listserv, but it deserves another shout-out!

Congratulations and two mighty woo-HOOs to regional members Monica Baker and Lois Syzmanski for being selected as finalists for the SCBWI Crystal Kite Award!

Monica was nominated for her novel, FREESTYLE:

A thriller for young readers, join Mitchell Burke, a 13-year-old boy from Maryland who stumbles into a dream portal that transports him to the 1820s, where he faces Patty Cannon, the legendary and ruthless slave kidnapper. Mitch tries to lead a normal life, but his nights are interrupted by the adventures in his dreams and mysterious connections between Patty Cannon and his family. Learn how Mitch builds a stronger bond with this father, a reservist on active duty in the Middle East; resolves conflict; and learns the truth about slaves crossing to freedom in Pennsylvania before the Civil War. Ages 9-14 years.

Lois was nominated for THE TRUE STORY OF SEA FEATHER:

A family travels to Chincoteague Island, Virginia, to see the annual wild pony penning auction. One daughter, Shannon, has saved her money and hopes to buy a pony. Events transpire unexpectedly and end happily. Shannon learns that in life, you get what you give. Grades 3-5.

Hmm….I tried to go into the site to cast my vote but when I clicked on the “Crystal Kite” tab nothing came up. I’m not sure if it’s just my computer but I wanted to share that with you in case anyone else is having trouble.

  2. You are so wonderful to make a note of this on our blog! Thanks so much for the kudos! I know I feel honored, and I feel certain Monica does, too!
