Author Book Club Event #2

Naomi and I are happy to report that our second ABC event was another exciting success!

On Sunday afternoon, close to two dozen of us braved the dismal weather and were rewarded with the pleasure of listening to author Debbie Levy share her experiences of writing her nonfiction book, The Year of Goodbyes: A True Story of Friendship, Family, and Farewells.

We were especially privileged to meet Debbie’s mother, Jutta (pronounced Yutta), who at the age of 12 fled Nazi Germany in November 1938 with her mother, father, and younger sister.

What an amazing book that took ten years to come to fruition!  The idea stemmed from a reunion in 2000 between Jutta and six of her former classmates from the Jewish School for Girls in Hamburg, Germany.  Debbie struggled with finding the best format and genre for this story–prose, fiction, nonfiction.   She finally settled on the power of spare verse in keeping with the poems in the original poesiealbum (Jutta’s childhood autograph book) which is also an integral part of the story.

The love, strength, and pride between mother and daughter was clearly evident as they talked side by side about their individual experiences and each one’s part in the final process.

Don’t miss this powerful story!
