We will run four short story competitions in 2011. The deadlines will be the end of February, May, August and November. Our main writing competitions have an open theme with a 3,000 word limit. There are three prizes to the top three winning writers of £100, £50 and £25. There will also be the opportunity for the stories to be published on our website as well as being recorded for broadcast on Brighton’s Coastway Hospital Radio, which provides music and entertainment to a network of Brighton hospitals.
The competition is just four pounds to enter, via PayPal or cheque, and the competition is open to writers worldwide. Stories can be submitted online along with payment or by post with a cheque. We will notify all entrants of receipt of their story. Each entry will be judged impartially and be read at least twice in full before judging decisions are made.
We are planning some fun free to enter contests too. Our first is a flash fiction- 250 word limit. Deadline 31st January 2011. Five song titles are on the site as themes. Three ten pound prizes and publication on site.

    Thank you

  2. It’s time to break out that brand-new 2011 planner and pencil in those things you don’t want to miss out on this year! The Highlights Foundation has a scheduled packed with exciting new workshops, as well as time-tested favorites that fill fast.

We keep our workshops intimate, with a low faculty-student ratio to give you and your writing plenty of focused attention. Reserve your space early so you don’t miss out! Take a look at our Founders Workshop newsletter, request an application for the workshop(s) of your choice, star those dates in your planner, and give yourself something wonderful to look forward to in the new year.

  3. Here’s another opportunity–this one at the Highlights Foundation with Harold Underdown:

Harold Underdown tells us that he will be working with the Highlights Foundation this year in two different workshops. On March 10 -13, at the Highlights Founders Workshop site near Honesdale, PA, he will introduce proven techniques for self-editing and for revising. The goal is not so much to revise a manuscript (though participants will) but to increase their ability to revise on their own or by working with other writers-thus reducing their need for help from workshops and critiques! Harold will be joined by children’s book editor Eileen Robinson, who runs F1rst Pages. Harold and Eileen will be drawing on their experience working in-house as editors and running their Kid’s Book Revisions workshop to help writers to think like editors.

The workshop is limited to twelve writers: information and an application form can be found at the Highlights Foundation website. Or you may phone Jo Lloyd at 570-253-1192, or e-mail jo.lloyd@highlightsfoundation.org, to request an application.

Harold will also be teaching this summer at the Highlights Foundation’s 2011 Writer’s Workshop at Chautauqua, from July 16th through the 23rd. This is a fantastic week with stellar faculty. Writers who are concerned about costs should know that applications for scholarships are still being accepted through February 11th.

  4. Harold was editor for BUSY TOES, the first picture book Wendie Old and I wrote. He is brilliant and also friendly and approachable. If I weren’t chairing a big event the weekend of March 13, I would attend. The Honesdale workshops seem pricey but are well worth the cost, given the presenters, accommodations, and food. I hope he and Eileen do this workshop again soon.

  5. I have written a children’s story that will need illustrations. I have chosen this site because my story is based on a mining town in West Virginia. It is my hope to get backing and to use illustrators that are familiar with the mining community.

  6. Hey, everybody,

Thought some readers might be interested in NaPiBoWriWee — or something like that. Participants write a picture book a day for a week beginning midnight on Sunday, May 1. That gives me about eleven hours to decide whether or not to give it a go. Past participants rave about their productivity over the week.
