On Sunday, April 10th, we held our first ABC event in Delaware for an enthusiastic group of our Delaware SCBWI members, as well as several Maryland members! We hope this event was the first of many to come.
Our featured author was Carol Larese Millward, author of the young adult novel Star in the Middle (WestSide Books, 2009). Carol talked about her experiences as a Family Advocate teaching parenting and life-skills classes to teen parents, her initial ideas for the book, her writing process, finding the voices for her two main characters, and her journey to becoming published. Her presentation included two helpful handouts: Writing With Empathy (including some writing exercises) and a Character Profile.
After Carol’s presentation, we enjoyed refreshments (thank you to Jane Matyger and Dottie Michael for their delicious contributions!) and time to get to know each other before brainstorming ideas for future Delaware gatherings. Good luck to the new critique groups now forming in Delaware, and a special thank-you to Loretta Carlson for reserving a place for us to meet at her church, St. Joseph on the Brandywine.
On May 14th, we’ve planned an event for our West Virginia members at Taylor Books in Charleston, WV. Email Edie Hemingway at mistylodge@verizon.net for more details.
Many thanks to Edie for inviting me to speak — I enjoyed meeting this great group of writers! Thanks all!
